India has achieved a milestone in advanced computing with the installation of its first commercial quantum computer at IIIT-Dharwad, Karnataka. Developed in collaboration with Bengaluru based QpiAI, the system will initially operate at 25 qubits, with plans to scale to 1,000 qubits. The initiative strengthens India’s position in global quantum innovation.
India’s technology landscape has taken a historic step forward with the deployment of the nation’s first commercial quantum computer at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Dharwad. The project, supported by the Government of Karnataka and deeptech firm QpiAI, marks the beginning of India’s commercial quantum computing era.
The quantum computer will initially run on a 25-qubit system, with ambitions to scale up to 1,000 qubits within the next two to three years. This development is part of a newly established Centre of Excellence in Quantum AI and Computing, aimed at fostering research, industry collaboration, and innovation in cutting-edge technologies.
