The southwest monsoon has made a dramatic and rapid advance across Madhya Pradesh, now drenching nearly the entire state and promising a sustained four-day spell of rain and thunderstorms. After entering slightly behind schedule on June 13–14, the monsoon surged across 51 of the state’s 52 districts within just three days, with only Bhind expected to join the rain-soaked map by Thursday. This marks one of the fastest monsoon advances in recent years, bringing much-needed relief to residents and farmers.
Key Highlights
Monsoon Coverage: 51 out of 52 districts, including major cities like Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Jabalpur, have already received showers. Bhind is expected to see rain imminently, ensuring statewide coverage.
Heavy Rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for five districts bordering Gujarat and Rajasthan—Dhar, Jhabua, Ratlam, Neemuch, and Mandsaur. Anjad in Barwani district recorded 20 mm of rain, the highest so far.
Weather Systems at Play: Four active weather systems—including a low-pressure area and cyclonic circulation over Gujarat, western disturbances, and trough activity—are fueling the ongoing rain, expected to last at least four more days.
Temperature Relief: Daytime temperatures have dropped across the state, with Shivpuri at 40°C and Pachmarhi at a cool 28.2°C. Major cities are enjoying milder weather, a welcome change after weeks of heat.
Safety and Preparedness: District administrations are on high alert, especially in flood- and lightning-prone areas. Relief and rescue teams are on standby, and urban bodies are working to prevent waterlogging and power disruptions.
Agricultural Boost: Farmers are celebrating the timely rains, which are crucial for Kharif crop sowing. Agricultural departments are advising on crop planning and soil preparation.
Tragic Incidents: The weather has also brought hazards; two girls in Singrauli lost their lives to lightning, and thunderstorms have caused localized disruptions in several districts.
Forecast: The IMD predicts the rain spell will persist, with wind speeds reaching up to 60 km/h in some areas. Residents are advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
