In a major move towards digital administration, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has provided Application Programming Interface (API) access to the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department for its recently introduced WhatsApp chatbot facility. The decision, made on May 27, 2025, is aimed at transforming the way citizens get access to important transport-related services in the state.
The WhatsApp bot, +91-8005441222, enables citizens to access a variety of transport-related services—vehicle registration information, driving license status, challan details, and application status—without having to physically go to transport offices or wait in line. The service is 24x7 and is linked to the central Vahan and Sarthi databases for real-time, authentic information.
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh termed the move a landmark in developing a smarter, more transparent, and responsive transport system for Uttar Pradesh. "This WhatsApp chatbot is a testament to our commitment to utilizing technology for citizens' welfare. It makes the department more accessible to the public and is also a step towards transparent, efficient, and responsive administration," Singh added.
The chatbot has the following key features:
-
Access to services such as driving license renewals, vehicle registrations, challan payments, road tax, and ownership transfers.
-
Sequential step-by-step instructions for frequent use services.
-
Multilingual help, so anyone in Uttar Pradesh can use it.
-
Strict data privacy compliance, with no citizen data stored or exchanged.
Citizens can begin availing the service by saving the number +91-8005441222 and sending a basic "Hi" on WhatsApp. The chatbot returns an immediate message of available services in the form of a menu, thus providing convenience and accessibility, particularly for rural dwellers, senior citizens, and working professionals.
The API connectivity from MoRTH is also likely to increase the capabilities of the chatbot further, making the system more efficient and user-friendly. The department is now in the process of completing procedural formalities and intends to launch the extended service to the people shortly.
This initiative is a part of Uttar Pradesh's larger drive for digital empowerment and e-governance, intended to lower the footfalls at RTO offices, minimize money and time spent by citizens, and enhance transparency in public service delivery.
