IKEA has made a bold move in redefining its India growth strategy by opening its first small-format Plan & Order Point (PaOP) in East Bengaluru. The step is a dramatic departure from the Swedish retailer's conventional large warehouse stores and is designed to make IKEA's home furnishing solutions more accessible, flexible, and locally relevant for Indian consumers.

The new PaOP covers just 740 square metres - a dramatic reduction compared to IKEA's typical stores, which measure more than 40,000 square metres. The small format is used as a pure customer interaction centre with one-on-one personalised consultations, expert design advice, and flexible planning and installation options. Customers are able to select a do-it-yourself option, guided planning, or complete end-to-end design and installation, while also having access to IKEA's huge digital catalog of more than 7,000 products. Orders can be placed at the store, with home delivery, click-and-collect, or local partner pick-up options, to make it convenient for city living.

IKEA's Country Expansion Manager, Pooja Grover, pointed out that the PaOP format enables the brand to be more proximate to residential and workplace districts, responding to the changing requirements of a young, urban consumer. Bengaluru was selected due to its vibrant residential development, technologically advanced populace, and reputation as a central IT hub, providing a suitable test market for this localized strategy.

This is all part of IKEA's long-term strategy for driving growth in India through a chain of small-format stores not just in six big cities-Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Chennai, and Pune-but also in some of the key Tier II cities. The approach is to make IKEA more responsive, accessible, and flexible to local market opportunities, and at the same time enable profitable and scalable growth.

In terms of scale globally, IKEA has 174 PaOPs, and Bengaluru debut is a prelude to new dawn for the company in India-one of convenience, customization, and greater involvement in the local community. Indian customers can now look forward to several more formats to be implemented soon as the company ventures out with new sizes and collaborations with property developers.
