Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently sounded a timely warning to health enthusiasts: while popular home remedies like haldi (turmeric), jeera (cumin), and methi (fenugreek) are full of health benefits, overindulgence can prove counterproductive. In a recent media interview and social media post, Diwekar states that these foods, though natural, need to be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet–not as single cures or consumed in large quantities.

The health fad of consuming infused waters and herbal tonics like jeera water, lemon water, haldi water, and methi water has found favor for their metabolism, digestive, and weight loss properties. Diwekar cautions, however, that it is simple to go over the fine line between use and misuse. "What's beautiful as an ingredient in a healthy diet, isn't a genie if bottled up," she advises, cautioning against consuming concentrated shots and instead using these ingredients in regular meals for optimal benefit.

Experts agree that while haldi, jeera, and methi are beneficial for digestion, immunity, and even weight management, branding them as magic pills is a misconception. For example, the anti-inflammatory property of turmeric is best seen in massive doses under medical supervision, not in daily quantities in the kitchen. Fenugreek, beneficial as it is to the digestive system and blood sugar management, causes gastric upset in excess.

Key Highlights:
  • Moderation is the Key: Overuse of haldi, jeera, and methi can lead to digestive disorders and other illnesses.
  • Not a Panacea: They must not replace medical treatment for chronic conditions like diabetes or arthritis.
  • Add to Meals: Incorporate these superfoods into a daily meal, but not as concentrated tonics or shots.
  • Search for Side Effects: Excess usage can cause stomach discomfort, enhance acidity, or interfere with other medications.
  • Portion Control: Take a little at a time first and observe how your body reacts before taking more.
  • Holistic Health: Use these remedies in combination with a healthy lifestyle—healthy diet, regular physical activity, good sleep, and stress management.
