Gateway Distriparks Limited (GDL) successfully completed its first-ever double stack train service, enhancing container transportation capacity and operational efficiency. This milestone strengthens GDL’s rail logistics operations, connecting inland container depots through the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, promising faster deliveries and reduced freight costs for import-export businesses.
Boosting Rail Freight with Double Stack Trains
Gateway Distriparks Limited, a leading multimodal logistics provider, has completed its inaugural double stack train service, marking a significant development in India’s rail freight sector. Double stack trains, carrying containers stacked two high, significantly increase payload capacity per trip, optimizing freight costs while easing congestion on rail routes and ports.
This service leverages GDL’s strategic inland container depots (ICDs) including Gurgaon, Viramgam, and Faridabad, all linked to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The WDFC provides a high-speed, dedicated freight rail path facilitating rapid and efficient container movement, thus improving service reliability for exporters and importers nationwide.
Strategic Advantages and Regional Impact
By integrating double stack services, GDL enhances the logistics ecosystem with up to 30% more container capacity per train, decreasing the number of train trips required and reducing transit times. This innovation will benefit exporters and importers in regions connected via the ICDs, such as Delhi NCR, Haryana, Gujarat, and Western India ports like Mundra, Pipavav, and Nhava Sheva.
Chairman and Managing Director Prem Kishan Dass Gupta emphasized this milestone as strengthening GDL’s leadership in rail logistics and sustainability. “The launch of double stack train services not only improves carrying capacity but also contributes toward cost efficiencies and faster deliveries, critical for maintaining India’s competitive edge in global trade,” he said.
