Safran Electronics & Defence has signed a joint venture with Bharat Electronics Limited to locally manufacture HAMMER precision-guided air-to-surface weapons in India. The partnership strengthens defence self-reliance, supports the Air Force and Navy, and expands Safran’s role in civil and military aviation, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
French aerospace and defence giant Safran Electronics & Defence has taken a major step in expanding its footprint in India by signing a joint venture and cooperation agreement with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The partnership will focus on the local manufacturing, supply, and maintenance of HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) precision-guided air-to-surface weapons, strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence production.
Key Highlights
-
Joint Venture Signed: Safran and BEL will hold equal ownership in the new entity, formalising an MoU signed earlier this year at Aero India.
-
Local Manufacturing: The JV will produce HAMMER weapons domestically, ensuring greater indigenisation and long-term support for the Indian Air Force and Navy.
-
Weapon Capability: HAMMER is a combat-proven, precision-guided munition with a range of over 70 km, adaptable to platforms like Rafale and LCA Tejas, and resistant to jamming.
-
Strategic Expansion: Beyond defence, Safran is also stepping up its presence in civil aviation, aligning with India’s growing aerospace ecosystem.
-
National Impact: The partnership supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, boosting defence manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
This collaboration underscores Safran’s commitment to India’s civil and military aviation sectors while enhancing indigenous defence capabilities.
