A new study has come to challenge the long-held assumption that iron deficiency is the main cause of anemia in India. The research, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed venous blood samples from 4,613 participants across eight Indian states. Findings revealed that iron deficiency accounted for less than one-third of anemia cases, with other factors such as low vitamin B12 levels and environmental influences like air pollution playing significant roles.
These findings indicate that the current anemia prevention strategies, which are largely iron supplementation, may need a rethink. Addressing the multifaceted causes of anemia could lead to more effective interventions and improved public health outcomes in India.
