In a landmark achievement for sustainable rural development, Kondareddypally village in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district has become South India’s first fully solar-powered village. The initiative, part of the Telangana government’s green energy mission, blends modern technology with traditional village life, setting a precedent for clean energy adoption across the region.
Key highlights of the solar transformation:
1. The project covers 514 homes and 11 government buildings, including schools and offices
2. Each house is equipped with a 3 kW rooftop solar panel, generating around 360 units of electricity monthly
3. Government buildings operate on 60 kW solar units, ensuring uninterrupted power for public services
4. The village exported nearly one lakh units of surplus energy to the grid in September alone, earning close to Rs 5 lakh
5. Residents now enjoy zero electricity bills and have become green entrepreneurs by selling excess power at Rs 5.25 per unit
6. The Rs 10.53 crore project was executed by Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TGREDCO)
7. Funding included a Rs 3.56 crore central subsidy and CSR contributions from Premier Energies
8. The remaining 34 mud-walled homes will be solarised once their Indiramma housing upgrades are completed
9. Ministers inaugurated additional infrastructure projects worth Rs 97 crore, including a milk chilling unit and temple development
10. Officials hailed Kondareddypally as a model for rural electrification and carbon footprint reduction
