Tata Steel has unveiled a historic £1.25 billion investment to revolutionize its Port Talbot plant in South Wales into a state-of-the-art green steelmaking complex. The ambitious venture, supported by £500 million of UK government funding, will involve the commissioning of a cutting-edge electric arc furnace (EAF) and a new pickling line, which will replace the plant's outdated blast furnaces and cut carbon emissions by as much as 90%—the equivalent of 1.5% of the UK's entire direct CO₂ output.
Construction starts in summer 2025, with the EAF operating by the end of 2027. The transformation is going to protect approximately 5,000 jobs and generate over 300 new skilled jobs in cooperation with local contractors, enhancing the area supply chain and economy. The new pickling line will enhance capacity by 50% and accommodate up to 220 staff during construction.
Tata Steel's pledge not just ensures the future of steel production in Wales but also creates a benchmark for green industry with a target of net-zero steel production by 2045. The move has been welcomed by local leaders and industry bosses as a "major boost" for South Wales, securing the long-term sustainability of the region's manufacturing industry.
