In a stunning display of team-first mentality, Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer denied himself his chance at IPL century to give importance to the team's score over Gujarat Titans. Shashank Singh has revealed that Iyer, stranded on 97*, told him to play boundaries at the expense of his own milestone in the last over.
"From ball number one, Shreyas had said, 'don't worry about my hundred!'" Shashank revealed after their inning. The 26-year-old reacted superbly, hammering 44 in just 16 balls, of which five fours came in the final over.
Iyer's unselfish gesture helped take PBKS to a record-breaking 243/5, their second-best IPL score. His unbeaten 97 from 42 balls, with nine sixes, put the match into a nail-biting mode.
This display of leadership and camaraderie is a heartening beginning to Iyer's captaincy stint with Punjab Kings, as they pursue their first elusive IPL championship.
