India has introduced its first all-vegetarian train, the Vande Bharat Express, connecting Delhi to Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. The semi-high-speed train serves only vegetarian food to passengers, with no eggs or meat on the menu. To ensure a strictly vegetarian atmosphere, non-vegetarian food or snacks are not allowed to be carried onboard by passengers. Only vegetarian ingredients are used in the kitchens of the train, and even the staff avoid handling non-vegetarian food.
The Vande Bharat Express has been bestowed with the coveted Sattvik certification, presented by the Sattvik Council of India in association with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The certification is an extension of a larger movement aimed at encouraging vegetarian-friendly travel, especially on the routes that connect significant religious places such as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi at Katra.
Apart from its vegetarian options, the train also serves health-conscious passengers with low-calorie meals, gluten-free foods, and biodegradable packaging. The initiative is aimed at improving the travel experience while ensuring environmental sustainability.
