Today, President Donald Trump called his Cabinet to meet in the White House, marking the fifth such meeting of his new term, and occurring just after 100 days of his administration being back in office. The meeting occurred at a delicate moment, when the U.S. economy had its weakest quarter since 2022, with the Commerce Department noting a 0.3 percent contraction in G.D.P. Trump and his aides blamed the economic decline on the remaining impact of the previous administration, while economists cited the president’s new tariffs and broad sweeping policy changes as the biggest contributor to Consumer and business anxiety.

During the Cabinet meeting, Trump continued to stand behind his trade strategy when he talked about tariffs against China and Canada, as well as an expansion of deportations that are already occurring as part of a greater immigration crackdown. Cabinet members gave updates on the economic recovery, border security, foreign relations and national defense to set the tone for the president to provide a structure for what he envisions the next phase of his presidency to move toward.

Later in the day, Trump is expected to host important C.E.O.s at the White House to discuss recent investments while trying to solicit future commitments to U.S. industry. Simultaneously, in Washington, D.C., the Senate is preparing to vote on a resolution that is designed to go against Trump’s tariff policies in a way that removes the National Emergency otherwise allowing the tariffs to occur.

With whatever inevitable determination it may take, the Cabinet meeting shows the administration is pressing forward with their agenda through increasingly layered challenges both home and abroad, along with signs that during all of this, voter sentiment, at least for now, may be worn down by the state of the economy.
