President Donald Trump has unveiled the Golden Dome, a $175 billion missile defense system designed to shield the U.S. from nuclear and non-nuclear threats. Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, this ambitious project aims to deploy space-based interceptors alongside ground-based defenses, marking the first time U.S. weapons will be stationed in space.

The system promises multi-layered protection, intercepting missiles at various stages—from launch to mid-flight and final approach. Trump has allocated an initial $25 billion, but experts warn the true cost could exceed $500 billion. The Pentagon has expressed concerns over feasibility, citing technical and financial hurdles. Defense analysts argue that space-based missile interception remains unproven, with significant engineering challenges ahead.

Canada has entered high-level discussions to join the initiative, with Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasizing national security concerns. However, critics question whether the Golden Dome can realistically counter advanced threats from China and Russia.
While Trump aims for full operational capability by 2029, defense experts remain skeptical. The Congressional Budget Office estimates decades of development before the system reaches effectiveness. With no congressional funding secured yet, the Golden Dome faces political and strategic uncertainties.
