Siddharth Roy Kapur, one of India’s most influential producers, is on a mission to reshape the country’s entertainment landscape by backing fresh stories told in unique voices. Speaking at the WAVES 2025 Summit, Kapur emphasized that the future of Indian content lies in originality, authenticity, and the courage to break away from formulas—qualities he believes will catapult Indian stories onto the global stage.

Key Highlights:

A Call for New Narratives: Kapur insists that the industry must move beyond safe, formulaic content and instead champion stories that are rooted in real experiences and local cultures. “We’re on the cusp of Indian stories breaking out globally like never before,” he said, noting that streaming platforms now offer instant reach to audiences in over 190 countries. “Distribution is no longer the barrier—it’s about staying true to the stories we want to tell. If we tell them with honesty and conviction, the world will listen.”

Global Ambitions: Kapur envisions Indian content joining the ranks of global hits like Squid Game and Money Heist. He has set his sights on projects with international appeal, such as the upcoming adaptation of William Dalrymple’s The Anarchy, directed by Stephen Frears, which will bring Indian history to a worldwide audience.

Backing Writers and Risk-Takers: Kapur believes that the key to industry success is nurturing writers and directors who bring fresh perspectives. He advocates for better pay, credit, and training for writers, and encourages producers to take creative risks. “Any creative undertaking is a risk. If you don’t take risks, that’s the riskiest thing of all,” he remarked.

The Streaming Revolution: According to Kapur, the explosion of OTT platforms has unleashed an unprecedented diversity of voices and genres, making it possible for hyper-local stories to resonate globally. He sees this as the perfect environment for unique, culturally authentic content to thrive.

Kapur’s vision is clear: India’s next big leap in entertainment will come from stories that are bold, rooted, and told by voices that dare to be different. As he puts it, “Great storytelling is our only playbook. The world is ready to listen—if we have the courage to speak.”
