The U.S. State Department has implemented a significant overhaul of its worldwide visa wait time information, effective April 25, 2025, bringing greater transparency and new features to nonimmigrant and immigrant visa applicants alike. The update comes as demand for U.S. visas continues to rise globally, particularly in India, where applicants are facing some of the longest wait times on record.

Key Highlights:
  • The new Global Visa Wait Times website now posts both the previous month's average interview wait time and the estimated months until the next available appointment instead of days for a better overview.
  • B-1/B-2 (business/tourist) visa wait times continue to be long in big Indian cities, with Chennai averaging 11.5 months, still showing high demand and consular capacity constraints.
  • The updated system features a new immigrant visa waiting time tool and enhancements to nonimmigrant classes such as student (F, J, M) and work visas (H, L, O, P, Q) to assist applicants in planning more efficiently.
  • Applicants are encouraged to monitor the scheduling system regularly since new appointment slots become available regularly and earlier dates might open up.
The wait time statistics are provided for illustrative purposes only and do not provide a promise of a certain date of appointment; interview waiver eligibility is not captured in these numbers.

The revision addresses recent complaints about the old data and looks to increase transparency and user convenience for international visitors.
