Vedanta Limited has been directed by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) to deposit ₹711.7 million as environmental compensation for unauthorized disposal of fly ash in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh districts. The penalty follows investigations confirming violations of environmental norms and public complaints about illegal dumping, which amounted to over 711,000 tonnes of fly ash.
The OSPCB issued a show-cause notice to Vedanta in August 2024, demanding justification within 15 days, but no satisfactory response was received. The matter was escalated to the chief secretary for final approval to enforce the penalty. Strict measures have been instructed to prevent further violations, with district administrations tasked with monitoring compliance.
This action highlights increasing scrutiny on industrial environmental practices and reinforces accountability under pollution control regulations.
