India is poised to witness an electric mobility boom, with a latest report estimating as many as 123 million electric vehicles (EVs) on India's roads by 2032 under the National EV Targets scenario. This boom is a revolutionary leap towards cleaner transportation and aligns with the nation's vision of becoming net-zero by 2070.

Key Highlights:
  • The forecast is by the India Energy Storage Alliance and Customised Energy Solutions, and it presents a best-case scenario in which strong government policies and infrastructure development drive high EV uptake.
  • The National EV Targets scenario-consistent with India's EV30@30 pledge-sees 80% penetration of electric two- and three-wheelers, 30% for private electric four-wheelers, 70% for commercial vehicles, and 40% for electric buses by 2030.
  • Government incentives such as the FAME-II scheme have been instrumental, providing demand incentives to all vehicle categories and capital subsidy for public charging stations, propelling both sales and charging network growth.
To date in 2024, electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers make up more than 93% of India's EV inventory, with four-wheelers at 6% and buses/trucks under 1%-a pattern set to carry on as these categories power the majority of future growth.

The report identifies the importance of a massive up-scaling of charging stations, both public and private, to facilitate the expected EV boom and provide for unhampered adoption across the country.

Meeting this goal would not only reduce emissions but also boost India's economy, generate green jobs, and make India a world leader in electric mobility.
