NLC India’s Power Play: NUPPL’s Ghatampur Project Powers UP and Assam

Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49%), has declared the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) for Unit-2 (660 MW) of the 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, effective from December 9, 2025. This milestone brings the total operational capacity at Ghatampur to 1,320 MW, with the final unit on track for completion in FY 2025–26. The project is a major step towards strengthening power supply for Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

 

To fuel the plant, NUPPL has been allotted the Pachwara South Coal Block in Jharkhand, with an extractable coal reserve of 264.84 million tonnes. The block was previously unexplored and has been explored by NUPPL through detailed drilling. The normative capacity of the mine is 9 million tonnes per annum, and the coal grade is G10, making it suitable for thermal power generation. Coal production from the block is expected to commence in phases during FY 2025–26, ensuring a sustainable fuel supply for the plant.
