No Borders, Just Stars! India’s Cosmic Journey Begins with Axiom-4 Liftoff

Mission Overview
Today, the Axiom-4 mission leaves Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with the Crew Dragon capsule.

The four-member crew includes Mission Pilot Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (India) and Peggy Whitson (USA), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary).

The mission will last 14 days, splashing down on June 22.

India's Role in the Mission
Shubhanshu Shukla will be the first Indian space traveler to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) and the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma's flight in 1984.

His journey is a precursor to India's indigenous human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan, scheduled for the end of 2026.

India has chosen seven microgravity experiments for the mission, which span across agriculture, food science, to human biology.

Scientific Contributions
The mission will conduct over 60 scientific experiments, of which seven are Indian experiments, to:

Microalgae radiation effect

Cultivating salad seeds in space

Tardigrade survival and transcriptomics:

Muscle regeneration in microgravity

These experiments, conceived by Indians, are a significant breakthrough in the space biology research of India.

Cultural and Diplomatic Significance Shukla will carry Indian cuisine on the ISS, including moong dal halwa, rajma-chawal and Jaipuri mixed vegetables, following Sunita Williams' trend of carrying Indian cuisine to space.

The mission boosts India's cooperation with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), with ESA astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski flying on board Shukla.

India reportedly contributed $60-70 million to the mission, which is a diplomatic achievement mapped out at the PMO level.

Future Prospects

The mission will provide Shukla with first-hand experience in orbit operations, teamwork, and crisis management—all essential to the success of Gaganyaan.

India is set to have its own space station in the year 2035 and to have an astronaut on the Moon by 2040, reiterating its ambitious space plan.
