Octo-Sensation: Blanket Octopus Makes Waves at Mossel Bay

In an astonishing sighting, a blanket octopus appeared at Mossel Bay harbour, fascinating local photographer and filmmaker Christiaan Stopforth. This elusive animal, seldom spotted by man, was observed swimming in the harbour during the open day at the National Sea Rescue Institute's Station 15 on March 8. Stopforth leapt into the water to take photos and film footage of the bright violet-coloured octopus with shades of red and blue. Blanket octopuses spend their entire lives drifting in the open sea and can dive deeper if threatened, distracting predators with their capes. Only female blanket octopuses have this unique cape. The sighting shows the distinctive biodiversity in South African waters.
