Old Code, New Clothes: Narayana Murthy Unveils India's AI Masquerade

Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, has torn into the overuse of "AI" in the tech space in India. Speaking at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Murthy said it has become a fad in this country to call any ordinary program AI. True AI, Murthy remarked, is dependent on machine learning and deep learning so that it can handle unsupervised algorithms and mimic human behavior. According to Murthy, in India, many so-called "AI systems" are just old programs redone in new packaging. He said that while AI is going to displace some jobs, it is, at the same time, going to enhance the economy if utilized wisely. In this respect, he asked entrepreneurs to keep their vision focused on job creation, wherein compassionate capitalism seems to him to be the way to go to balance economic growth and social responsibility.
