Over 50.7 million take dip in Sangam by 4 pm on Mauni Amavasya during Mahakumbh

More than 50.7 million devotees thronged to the Sangam in Prayagraj for the auspicious Mauni Amavasya bath during the ongoing Maha Kumbh. The huge crowd resulted in a stampede in which 30 people lost their lives and 60 suffered injuries, all within the early hours of the day. This was because of pilgrims rushing to take the holy dip, which is believed to clear all sins and bring salvation. Amid high security, the sacred 'Amrit snan' of the 13 akharas was completed despite the tragedy. Uttar Pradesh government has set up a helpline for pilgrims while political leaders cutting across parties expressed condolences and asked for better crowd management.
