Pablo Escobar’s Hippos May Find New Home In India’s Vantara Sanctuary

Colombian authorities recently authorized the culling of 80 hippos, descendants of animals illegally imported by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s. With their population now exceeding 200, the hippos have become an invasive species, threatening biodiversity and local communities. Anant Ambani has stepped in with a bold conservation proposal.

Who Is Anant Ambani?

Anant Ambani, 31, is the youngest son of Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man and chairman of Reliance Industries. He oversees Vantara, a 3,000-acre wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Gujarat, billed as one of the world’s largest conservation facilities. Vantara already houses elephants, tigers, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and other rescued animals. 

The Hippo Relocation Plan

Ambani has formally requested the Colombian government to halt the culling and allow a “safe, scientifically-led translocation” of the hippos to India. His plan includes veterinary-led capture, specialized transport, and the creation of a purpose-designed naturalistic habitat at Vantara. He emphasized that the animals “did not choose where they were born” and deserve a humane solution. 

Challenges And Global Debate

The proposal faces hurdles, including approvals from Colombian authorities, Indian regulators, and international wildlife bodies. Conservationists are debating feasibility, ecological risks, and costs—estimated at $3.5 million for relocation. Still, Ambani’s intervention has added an international dimension to Colombia’s environmental crisis.
