Panama Canal Fees Surge: Trump’s Threats and China's Growing Influence at Play

The Panama Canal has become a focal point of discussion as fees continue to rise, significantly impacting shipping costs. Effective January 1, 2025, the Panama Canal Authority has implemented new transit reservation fees, increasing charges by $1,000 to $3,000 depending on the service and cargo type. Major shipping carriers like MSC and CMA CGM have introduced a $40 per TEU surcharge for routes from Asia to the U.S. East Coast and Gulf, aiming to offset these increased costs. Concerns about China's influence and security implications have also been raised, particularly in light of U.S. political commentary.
