Peacekeeping Gets a Makeover: India Says 'Ladies First' in Combating Violence

Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth underlined the role of women peacekeepers in stopping gender-based violence at the 15th Aero India conference in Bengaluru. Seth had bilateral talks with overseas counterparts, reviewing defence cooperation and India's emerging capabilities in indigenous manufacturing of equipment. The comment of the minister is in tandem with India's rising deployment of women in UN peacekeeping operations, including deploying all-female police units. This emphasis on women peacekeepers is part of a larger trend of gender mainstreaming in military interventions internationally to optimize effectiveness in combating gender-based violence in war zones.
