Released in 1943, "Kismat" Remains Unbeaten as India's First Blockbuster

In a surprising revelation, the 1943 film Kismat continues to hold its place in Indian cinema history. Directed by Gyan Mukherjee and starring Ashok Kumar, this black-and-white classic was the first Indian film to cross the Rs 1 crore mark at the box office. Made on a modest budget of Rs 2 lakh, Kismet grossed Rs 1.6 crore, surpassing modern blockbusters in ticket sales. With a footfall of 3.5 crore, it outperformed recent hits like Pushpa 2 (2 crore) and 3 Idiots (3.2 crore)1. The film's 184-week run at Kolkata's Roxy Cinema further solidified its legendary status. Kismat's success is attributed to its bold themes of unmarried pregnant girl and introduction of the anti-hero character, setting new standards for Indian cinema.
