Roots of Change: Private Sector Takes the Lead in Forest Revival

Madhya Pradesh will introduce a revolutionary policy permitting private investors to restore degraded forest land. The state will transfer 10 to 1,000 hectares of forest to private companies for 60 years, giving them rights to sell 50% of minor forest produce and earn carbon credits. The plan is to restore 3.7 million hectares of degraded forests, meeting the state's finance shortage for renewal. Though the policy will help increase forest cover, its impact on tribal groups has raised questions. Objections and suggestions are being invited by the state government, with the plan set for implementation in March 2025.
