Sacrifice etched in Stone: PM Modi’s Tribute to Assam’s Unsung Heroes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a deeply symbolic homage to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation at the newly inaugurated Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, recognizing their sacrifice as a cornerstone of Assam’s identity and progress. The visit marked a rare and emotional moment, with Modi offering floral tributes and touring a gallery dedicated to the 860 martyrs who lost their lives in the six-year movement against illegal immigration.

• Historic Tribute at Swahid Smarak Kshetra :
  Modi offered floral tributes at the memorial’s eternal flame, which is perpetually lit in memory of the martyrs. He walked through the Swahid Gallery, reflecting on the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for Assam’s cultural and social identity.
   
• Recognition of Sacrifice:
  The Prime Minister emphasized that the sacrifices made during the Assam Agitation are an integral part of Assam’s collective memory and identity. His visit was described as a moment of pride and gratitude by Assam’s leadership.
   
• Memorial Features and Significance:
  Built at a cost of Rs 170 crore, the Swahid Smarak Kshetra spans 113 bighas and includes a 225-feet tall tower, busts and photos of martyrs, water bodies, an auditorium, and a cycle track. The memorial also hosts a sound and light show to narrate the history of the Assam Agitation.
   
• Political and Social Impact:
  The Assam Agitation, led by the All Assam Students’ Union and other organizations from 1979 to 1985, shaped Assam’s politics and identity. The movement culminated in the Assam Accord of 1985 and led to the formation of the Assam Gana Parishad.
   
• Leadership Presence:
  Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other state dignitaries accompanied Modi during the tribute. The event was seen as a gesture of national unity and recognition of Assam’s historic struggle.
