Sanskrit's Renaissance: Amit Shah Champions Language as Key to India's Progress

Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave an impassioned speech in Delhi, announcing Sanskrit not only the mother of Indian languages but a force for national development and world knowledge. Addressing the valedictory function of the 1008 Sanskrit Sambhashan Shivirs, Shah reiterated that the revival of Sanskrit is necessary for India to become a "vishwa guru" (world teacher) again.

Shah credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for creating a nationwide resurgence of Sanskrit, with government, public, and national mindset now aligned toward its promotion.

He described Sanskrit as the root of nearly all Indian languages and stressed that strengthening Sanskrit will, in turn, strengthen every Indian language and dialect.

The government has initiated a huge Rs 500 crore campaign to gather, digitize, and conserve Sanskrit and Prakrit manuscripts, leading to more than 5.2 million manuscripts recorded, 3.5 lakh digitized, and 1.37 lakh put online.

The Gyan Bharatam Mission, with an initial corpus of Rs 500 crore, will make sure that manuscripts are preserved and made available in the long term.

Shah highlighted the elevation of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan to Central Sanskrit University and new schemes to support Sanskrit scholars and educators.

He praised Sanskrit Bharati’s grassroots efforts, noting that since 1981, one crore people have been introduced to Sanskrit and one lakh teachers trained.

Shah asserted that Sanskrit’s wisdom spans yoga, mathematics, grammar, and environmental science, and that its knowledge is meant for the world, not for patents.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other officials followed the call, calling for a change of mindset to accept Sanskrit with pride.

The message was loud and clear: Sanskrit is not only a dead language, but an evolving vehicle for India's future innovation, integration, and global leadership.
