Skyward Surge: India’s Domestic Flyers Hit 1.36 Crore in June

India’s civil aviation sector continued its upward trajectory in June 2025, with domestic airlines ferrying over 1.36 crore passengers, marking a 3 percent rise from May and a notable year-on-year increase.

Passenger Volume and Growth Metrics

- June saw 1.36 crore passengers take to the skies, up from 1.32 crore in May  
- Cumulative traffic for January–June 2025 reached 851.74 lakh, reflecting a 7.34 percent annual growth  
- Monthly growth stood at 3.02 percent, underscoring sustained demand across routes  

Airline Market Share Movements

- IndiGo retained the top spot with 64.5 percent share, marginally down from 64.6 percent in May  
- Air India Group rose to 27.1 percent, up from 26.5 percent, signaling stronger performance across its subsidiaries  
- Akasa Air held steady at 5.3 percent, while SpiceJet slipped to 1.9 percent from 2.4 percent  

Operational Disruptions and Passenger Impact

- Cancellation rate for scheduled domestic flights stood at 0.93 percent  
- Technical issues accounted for 37 percent of cancellations, followed by operational (25 percent) and weather-related (22.4 percent) causes  
- 1,20,023 passengers faced delays, with airlines spending over Rs 1.68 crore on facilitation  
- 33,333 passengers were affected by cancellations, prompting Rs 72.40 lakh in compensation  
- 1,022 passengers were denied boarding, with Rs 99.57 lakh paid out
