Sulekha Ink: The Writing Revolution That Fueled Kolkata’s Swadeshi Movement

Amid the fierce tide of India’s freedom struggle, Sulekha Ink emerged as a powerful symbol of resistance and self-reliance in Kolkata. Born from the insistence of Mahatma Gandhi to boycott foreign goods, this homegrown ink company became a beacon of the Swadeshi movement, stitching together patriotism, innovation, and commitment to India’s independence.

Origins Rooted In Nationalist Zeal
In 1934, inspired by Gandhi’s refusal to use imported ink for signing freedom petitions, two brothers and freedom fighters from Bengal—Nanigopal and Sankaracharya Maitra—rose to the challenge of creating a high-quality indigenous ink. Collaborating with Satish Chandra Das Gupta, a retired chemist from Bengal Chemicals (a Swadeshi enterprise), they developed Sulekha Ink, aptly named by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, embodying the spirit of “good writing.” The Maitra family pooled their life savings and jewelry to bring this vision to life.

Championing Swadeshi Ideals Through Ink

Sulekha Ink not only replaced foreign-made inks but also became a souvenir of resistance, used to draft freedom petitions and believed to have been ink for the Indian Constitution’s signing.

The business was supported by an extensive grassroots network, with the brothers personally distributing ink via cycles and khadi shops, embedding the product in the fabric of the independence movement.

Sulekha’s success checked dependency on British imports, reinforced local industry, and embodied economic self-sufficiency critical to the Swadeshi cause.

Challenges and Revivals
Though the brand faced hardships post-independence and nearly vanished after the 1980s, renewed interest in eco-friendly, sustainable products and the resurgence of fountain pens sparked a revival. Led today by Kaushik Maitra, grandson of the founders, Sulekha Ink is regaining its legacy with innovative marketing connecting heritage and eco-consciousness.
