Sun-Powered Servers: Why Tech Leaders Are Betting on Solar for Data Centers

The battle to tap AI has set off a solar revolution among technology titans, with data centers increasingly turning to renewable power to fuel their rising energy needs. Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Cisco have signed deals for more than 100 megawatts of solar capacity each since January 2025, highlighting their commitment to sustainability while powering AI-driven innovation.

Meta takes the lead with several mega-deals, including a 595 MW project in Spain and a 505 MW installation in Texas. Microsoft has followed, buying 475 MW in Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri to support its AI data centers. Amazon has taken on hybrid solutions, pairing solar with wind and hydroelectric storage in its Iberian Peninsula project. Cisco's collaboration with X-Elio, meanwhile, brings 100 MW of solar power to its Texas operations.

These investments emphasize solar's strengths: quick deployment, minimal costs, and scalability. Solar farms are also being coupled with battery storage to deliver reliable energy—a necessity since data centers will soon be responsible for up to 12% of U.S. electricity demand by 2028.

While technology firms continue to advance AI and computing, their adoption of solar power holds promises of a more sustainable future for the industry.
