Supreme Court: Individuals Accused of Serious Crimes Should Be Barred from Contesting Elections

The Supreme Court of India has come out very stern on the eligibility to contest an election of those accused of serious crimes. While hearing a plea for interim bail on January 20, 2025, former councillor Tahir Hussain put up a plea for interim bail to campaign in the forthcoming Delhi assembly polls. Such persons should be barred from contesting in an election, the court said. Justice Pankaj Mithal said, "It is very easy to win elections sitting behind the bars". The election process definitely needs some transparency and integrity. After a series of arguments on Jan 21 the hearing is bound to continue regarding Hussain's plea to file his nomination amidst serious allegations against him.
