Supreme Court Mandates NEET UG for Indian Students Pursuing Medicine Abroad

The Medical Council of India's rule requiring Indian students to pass the NEET UG before enrolling in undergraduate medical programs overseas has been upheld by the Supreme Court. This decision, which was made public on February 20, 2025, affects students who want to study medicine abroad and then want to practice in India. The court determined that the rule was reasonable, open, and consistent with current standards for medical education. There are no exceptions to the ruling, which applies to students enrolled to international universities after 2018. Students can still study and work overseas without NEET if they choose not to pursue medical license in India, even though NEET UG is still required for those wishing to practice in India.
