Tax-Free Love: NRI Gifts to Indian Relatives Get Green Light

In a welcome clarification for many Indian families, gifts received from Non-Resident Indian (NRI) relatives are exempt from taxation in India. This applies to both the giver and the receiver, offering financial flexibility for cross-border family support. However, gifts from non-relatives exceeding ₹50,000 are taxable for the recipient. Importantly, all gifts received on the occasion of marriage or through a will, regardless of the relationship, remain tax-free.
