If your organization doesn’t have valid registration or approval under the relevant sections of the Income Tax Act as of March 31, 2024, your tax returns will be flagged for compulsory scrutiny if you claim any exemptions.

Why Is This Happening?

The government wants to make sure that only legitimate organizations benefit from tax breaks.

There have been concerns about misuse, especially among political parties that receive donations but don’t contest elections or submit required reports.

In recent years, thousands of registered but unrecognized political parties have received large sums in donations, raising questions about transparency and compliance.

What Does Compulsory Scrutiny Mean?

If your organization is picked for scrutiny, you’ll have to provide detailed documentation and explanations for your income and expenses.

The thresholds for being selected have gone up—in big cities, it’s ₹50 lakh or more in taxable income additions; in other places, it’s ₹20 lakh or more.

Notices for this year’s returns need to be issued by June 30, 2025.
