The End of an Era: Steve Smith Hangs Up His ODI Boots

Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has made a surprise retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket after Australia's semifinal defeat in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The 35-year-old did so after Australia's four-wicket defeat to India in Dubai. Smith, a two-time World Cup champion, had played 170 ODIs, making 5,800 runs at a strike rate of 43.28 with 12 centuries. He led Australia in 64 ODI games. Smith will still play Test cricket and T20 Internationals, mentioning the 2027 ODI World Cup as a chance for emerging players to prepare. His retirement brings an end to an era of Australian ODI cricket.
