The Share That Got Away: Chandigarh Man's Rs 12 Lakh Blunder

A Chandigarh man, Rattan Dhillon, has chosen not to act on the Rs 12 lakh value of Reliance Industries shares he found at home. The shares, initially bought in 1988, had increased manyfold because of stock splits and bonuses. Dhillon, who knows nothing about the stock market, consulted social media after discovering the physical share certificates. But he has decided not to go ahead with dematerializing the shares because it's a long process. It would take 6-8 months to get a legal heir certificate and the IEPFA process would take three years at most. Dhillon's move means that the shares, signed by Dhirubhai Ambani, will lie idle.
