Trade War Escalates: Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China

President Donald Trump has announced that new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will become effective on March 4, 2025. A 25% tariff will be levied on overall imports from the two nations, while a 10% tariff will be charged on energy products from Canada. Chinese imports, whose tariff stands at 10%, will have that tariff doubled to 20% on that date. Trump cited the threat of drug trafficking, specifically fentanyl, into the U.S. to justify the steps. The news has brought about market volatility, with futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining slightly in response to the announcement.
