Trump’s Tariff Strategy: More Political Room for Market Pain Than Many Realize

President Trump's incendiary tariff policy—imposing a 10% initial tariff on the majority of imports and up to 50% on "worst offenders"—has caused market volatility and global trade tensions. Yet Trump appears to have greater political room to withstand economic pain than many had expected. Despite market upheaval in the financial markets after the "Liberation Day" tariff announcement, Trump's administration has suspended only reciprocal tariffs for 90 days (except for China), keeping the 10% tariff and raising China's tariff to 145%.

 

Trump frames tariffs as a defense of American manufacturing and sovereignty, using national emergency powers and appealing to swing industrial state voters. Popular consumer electronics exemptions and a focus on trade deficits mitigate domestic blowback, while the administration telegraphs readiness to absorb long-term trade wars. With the effective US tariff rate at a century-high 25%, Trump's political arithmetic hazards a bet that there is a public constituency for tough trade action even if markets continue to be unsettled.
