Turning Heat into Retreat: Mumbai Railways Introduce 238 AC Trains

In a historic announcement, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the introduction of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains on the Mumbai suburban railway network. This action, part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3 and 3A, is to revamp the city's lifeline and offer a more pleasant commuting experience to millions of commuters daily.

The new AC trains promise cutting-edge features, including automatic doors, energy-efficient systems, and faster acceleration to reduce travel time. Designed specifically for Mumbai’s dense network, these trains are expected to alleviate overcrowding and enhance passenger safety. Manufacturing will commence soon, with the rollout planned in phases.

This is accompanied by other transformative works in Mumbai, including the installation of Kavach 5.0, a sophisticated train protection system, and the redevelopment of 132 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Collectively, these projects reflect an investment of more than ₹17,000 crore in the railway infrastructure in Mumbai.

Although the announcement has received widespread acclaim, there are affordability concerns. Passengers have asked the authorities to make AC train fares affordable to all sections of society. The introduction of such modern trains represents a major leap towards transforming India's financial capital's public transport.
