"Voddakade Transformed Overnight: Banyan Tree Relocation Stirs Controversy

In a dawn raid on March 4, 2025, Porvorim, Goa authorities finished the contentious relocation of the 200-year-old banyan tree and Dev Khapreshwar temple. The relocation, part of a highway widening project, was strongly opposed by locals and activists. Despite the Bombay High Court's go-ahead, the surprise move has sparked public outrage. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured reconstruction of the temple at the new site, but the tensions have not yet settled. The PWD maintains due procedure was done, including seeking the consent of the temple caretaker, but environmentalists worry about the tree's survival after translocation.
