Volkswagen Faces $1.4 Billion Tax Dispute in India

German automaker Volkswagen has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court challenging a $1.4 billion tax demand by Indian authorities. The dispute centers on allegations that Volkswagen used a strategy to import unassembled car parts, classified as "individual components," to evade higher taxes on completely knocked-down units (CKDs). Indian authorities claim this violates import tax rules, while Volkswagen argues its approach was transparent and previously approved. The case threatens Volkswagen's $1.5 billion investments in India and raises concerns about the country's foreign investment climate. The court began hearings on February 5.
