Why January Leads the Year: The Origins of the Calendar Unveiled

The months of the English calendar, or the Gregorian calendar, are deeply rooted in Roman traditions. Each month’s name reflects Roman gods, leaders, and festivals. January is named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings, symbolizing a fresh start. This is why it marks the start of the year.

Initially, the Roman calendar began in March, with January and February added later by King Numa Pompilius around 713 BCE. January eventually became the first month in 45 BCE when Julius Caesar reformed the calendar. This alignment suited the Roman consular year, which began in January.

The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, refined earlier calendars for better accuracy, solidifying January as the year's starting point. Its adoption worldwide reflects history's blend of tradition, practicality, and astronomy, shaping how we count time today.
