Work by Choice, Not Necessity: Bill Gates on AI, Hustle Culture, and Giving Back

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently sat down with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath for the latest episode of the People by WTF podcast, where he shared his thoughts on work ethic, artificial intelligence, and philanthropy. Gates, known for his relentless drive, emphasized that his decision to continue working is a choice rather than a necessity.  

Reflecting on his career, Gates admitted that he was “mono-maniacal” about building Microsoft in his early years, but now sees work as a fulfilling endeavor rather than an obligation. He discussed how AI is set to transform the workforce, potentially leading to shorter work weeks and early retirements. However, he noted that the idea of never working at all remains difficult for him to grasp.  

The conversation also touched on philanthropy, with Gates explaining how earning and donating money can go hand in hand. He highlighted the importance of self-discipline and staying grounded, particularly in an era where AI is reshaping industries. Kamath, intrigued by Gates’ approach to balancing wealth creation and charitable giving, explored how societal structures might evolve as traditional jobs change.  

Gates has visited India multiple times, engaging with political leaders and key stakeholders to discuss public health, development, and innovation. His latest trip in March included meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers JP Nadda, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Jitendra Singh.
