She felt completely, entirely, undeniably at home.
-
That frozen moment, one woman, one pastry bag, one realisation, became the origin story of one of Mumbai's most loved and most principled home bakery brands.
The Origin A Journalist Who Became a Chef Who Became a Founder
-
Sarah Patka grew up in Mumbai, obsessed with making and eating desserts. In 12th grade she launched her first brand, Sugar Passion, baking 30 cupcakes for a birthday party. But her actual plan was journalism, until her family reminded her of something she kept overlooking: her undeniable, natural connection with baking.
-
With their support, she pursued hotel management at Anjuman IHMCT, then trained at the Taj Mahal Palace, and later worked with the Oberoi and Trident Group of Hotels, developing her craft under some of the finest pastry chefs in the city.
-
Then came the freezer. And the éclairs. And the moment she described simply: "I have always loved baking and should take it up more seriously." She left the Taj, came home, and spent every single day and night from September 2014 to January 2015 building Love & Flour from scratch.
The Strategic Genius Zero Wastage, Pre-Order Only, and a Cookie Pizza That Went Viral
-
The boldest decision Sarah made for Love & Flour was made before she even launched it: pre-order only, zero wastage, no substitutes, no compromise.
-
In an industry where most bakeries overproduce to meet walk-in demand and discard the surplus, Love & Flour built the opposite model. Every item baked had a name behind it. Every box was requested specifically, made with the full attention of a trained pastry chef, and delivered within 72 hours across Mumbai. This is a made-to-order luxury experience, not a home hobby.
-
And then came the Cookie Pizza. A deep dish cookie base loaded with Nutella, S'mores, peanut butter, or Belgian chocolate sauce, finished with Oreos and choco flakes. It went viral across Instagram, BuzzFeed India, and LBB Mumbai entirely through organic excitement. Sarah has since been featured in Filmfare, BuzzFeed India, and LBB Mumbai, with zero paid advertising behind any of it.
-
When she needed product photography and could not afford a photographer, she bought a DSLR and learned herself. When she needed a website, she built one. Every gap she encountered, she filled with skill, making the business more self-sufficient with every passing year.
Scale, Numbers and Real-World Impact
-
Love & Flour clocked under ₹6 lakh in revenue in 2023, ₹8.5 lakh in 2024, and ₹11 lakh in 2025. The customer base grew from 1,250 in 2023 to 1,750 in 2024 to 2,000-plus in 2025, with a target of 3,000 customers projected ahead. The brand turned profitable within its first year of launch and has remained so, entirely bootstrapped, with zero external funding and zero co-founders.
-
Love & Flour serves Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Lonavala, and Thane. It has 15,000 Instagram followers and 3,371 posts, every single one shot, edited, and published by Sarah herself, across a decade of consistent content creation.
-
The product range spans the viral Cookie Pizza, the Signature Belgian Chocolate Cake, San Sebastian Cheesecakes, New York-inspired Cheesecake Bars, and Cake Pops made from cake scraps, because even the offcuts serve the zero-wastage philosophy.
The Business Lesson Your Values Are Your Strategy
-
The sharpest lesson from Sarah Patka's journey is this: the smallest business can carry the biggest principles, and those principles, lived consistently, become the most powerful growth engine available.
-
Love & Flour has a set of structural commitments, zero wastage, pre-order only, no substitutes, full quality always, that are baked into how the business operates. Those commitments are not constraints. They are the reason 2,000 people across Mumbai and Pune trust this brand with their birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations.
-
"I am not just a home baker," Sarah says. "I am a chef by training and an entrepreneur at heart."
-
She started with 30 cupcakes at a birthday party. She trained in the finest kitchens in Mumbai. She found her purpose in a minus-17-degree freezer. She built a brand on her own terms, one pre-order at a time.
-
And in a market saturated with mass-produced sweetness, honesty baked into every single order is the most powerful ingredient of all.
