1,400 Million Litres of Water Lost Each Day to Leaks and Piracy in Indian Cities

Indian cities are losing huge amounts of water through leaks and theft. In Bengaluru, 435 MLD (30%) of the 1,450 MLD pumped from the Cauvery river is lost to unaccounted water discharge. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) aims to bring down this to 25% via infrastructure improvement and new technology. Ahmedabad loses 300 MLD to thievery and leakage, draining the civic body Rs 100 crore every year. These are neutralizing the efforts to expand water supply and achieve per capita availability norms. Experts opine that tackling the losses in the distribution system as well as non-metered or unauthorized connections are important for managing urban water in a sustainable way.
