36 Banned Chinese Apps Return to India Under New Identities

Several Chinese apps that were previously banned in India have made a return, with at least 36 now accessible on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Well-known apps such as Xender, MangoTV, Youku, Taobao, and Tantan have reappeared, some under new branding or ownership. Shein has re-entered the market through a collaboration with Reliance Retail, which ensures local manufacturing and data storage. PUBG Mobile, now called Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), was reinstated in 2023 after complying with security guidelines. This resurgence underscores the difficulties in enforcing app bans, as many have discovered alternative routes to re-establish themselves in the market, including partnerships with Indian companies and modifications in ownership structures.
