A Lesson in Responsibility: Neglecting Parents Can Have Lasting Consequences

Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has pointed out that children or relatives who disregard their elderly parents stand to lose their inheritance rights. This is according to the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, which was passed by the Central Government in 2007. According to the law, children or relatives must provide monetary and medical assistance to senior citizens. If they do not do so, elderly parents are entitled to revoke any will or gift deed that has been done in their benefit. The authorities can act in case of a complaint being registered under Section 9, and established cases could result in such documents being revoked, returning property to the parents.

 

Month-ending review meetings with sub-divisional officers dispose of these cases, and the district commissioners remain for appeals. Thousands of similar cases are now pending, explaining the necessity for taking care of elderly parents so that inheritance claims are not diluted.
